Access payment gateway from invoice

I am trying to access the paypal payment gateway using a paynow button on a stored invoice instead of from the checkout procedure in the shopping cart.
Anyone have an idea where to start?
I have tried to call return.php via post but can't get the totals from the database to post to paypal.
The paypal page does come up but with no information in it.
